Sketch notes
Compared to the previous observation of M101, M51 was just an explosion of bright twisting arms. At first these arms appeared to circle around the core but when my eyes had settled I started to notice faint breaks in contrast which showed two large arms extending 180˚ from the core.
The bridge connecting M51 to NGC 5195 was just seen with direct vision.
Again this was just off the zenith in perfect transparency, easily the best I have ever seen M51.
